I didn’t pay much attention to the radio dramatisation of Samuel Pepys’s diary this evening, but it seemed that even in the seventeenth century there was tension - the sort of tension that the article linked here should address. (Apparently, Pepys’s builders were from the part of Poland called Essex, so maybe we’ve become a bit more tolerant.)

Well, rats, I just deleted my WordPress database by accident. Amazingly, I have a fresh backup, but so far that hasn’t been a lot of help.

So I’m playing with Tumblr for a bit. It’s nicer than I remember. I might even stay here, although that sounds unlikely.

Martin Amis’s father’s English language

Kingsley Amis is Martin Amis’s father. That makes sense, actually. The thing is, Martin Amis doesn’t call his daddy Kingsley Amis “Daddy”, but rather “Kingsley Amis”, but it turns out that that doesn’t feel too incongruous.
